I've never really been the kind of person who gets excited about fundraising. Unless you count selling Girl Scout Cookies in elementary school. But who are we kidding? You sometimes forget its a fundraiser when all you see are Thin Mints and Samoas. All you are thinking is Samooooaaahhs. Getinmybelly.
Or is that just me?
I feel that same about Walk for Rice. While its a fundraiser, it is something near and dear to my heart (like Samoas) and it involves food... so naturally I want to share it with you.
Walk for Rice is an annual fundraising event featuring a 2.5 mile walk/run at Seattle's Seward Park. Walk for Rice enables Asian Counseling and Referral Service (ACRS) to buy rice and provide support services for the ACRS Food Bank, one of the most visited food banks in King County. It is the only food bank in the state that regularly acquires foods that meet Asian Pacific ethnic dietary needs. More than 5,000 people a year rely on ACRS' Food Bank and Nutrition Programs to have enough to eat; most are children under 18 years old or seniors over 65; most clients come from low-income, Asian Pacific American households. The food bank, located in Seattle’s International District, provides a central location for people to access food like rice, tofu, ramen, fish and fresh produce. ACRS' goal is to provide clients with fresh, nutritious foods to help them lead healthy lives.
Last year, we posted on our Facebook wall and told people we'd offer up a handful of sessions and give 50% of those proceeds back to Walk for Rice. We had two amazing families raise their hands, and with their help we were able to give $225 to the Food Bank, which is roughly equivalent to 400 pounds of rice!
This year, we are excited to continue that tradition. Except this time, we're not just offering a handful of sessions. We are opening it up to any session that takes place in the month of May.
Just think, 50% of your $175 session (that's $88 per session, if you need help doing the math) would buy nearly 150 pounds of rice! Isn't that amazing?
